Story & Background

To understand what UNBROKEN is about, you first have to understand why a performing company became the centre of controversy.

Background

One Company, Twenty Years on Stage

Shen Yun Performing Arts is built around classical Chinese dance, presenting five thousand years of Chinese civilization through dance, music and stagecraft. Touring theatres around the world, the company has gradually built an international reputation. In 2026, it marked its twentieth anniversary season.

Filming for UNBROKEN began at exactly this twentieth-anniversary moment. UNBROKEN: The Untold Story of Shen Yun is not a performance film; it points the camera at rehearsal halls, backstage areas, the road between tour stops, and the scenes where performances were forced to be rescheduled or cancelled.

The pressure campaign

The Pressure and Interference the Film Investigates

The following reflects claims presented in the film and related news reports; this page uses attributive wording.

UNBROKEN states that for more than twenty years, Shen Yun Performing Arts has been the target of a smear and suppression campaign; the film argues that this campaign includes propaganda narratives originating in China that were later picked up by some Western media.

UNBROKEN also documents specific incidents of interference during Shen Yun performances, including threats against theatres and staff. Related allegations have also appeared in multiple news reports: in March 2026, the New York Post reported Shen Yun's claim that bomb threats were attributable to the Chinese Communist Party; and in May 2026, Canada's Global News reported that the Chinese consulate had met with Vancouver officials in an attempt to stop an event critical of CCP rule.

The central question UNBROKEN asks is: when an arts company's performances touch on politically sensitive subjects, in what forms does transnational pressure arrive at the box office and backstage of a local theatre?

The allegations described on this page come from the film and the news reports it cites; they are not this website's independently verified conclusions. Links to the original reports are collected on the News & Media page for you to review.

Media narrative

The Film's Examination of the Media Narrative

UNBROKEN devotes considerable time to examining how mainstream media have covered Shen Yun Performing Arts. The film notes that The New York Times published a series of reports on Shen Yun, but that they did not include the accounts of dancers' parents and families, or of the doctors who treat dancers' injuries — injuries that are common in any elite performing arts company.

The film argues that the absence of these perspectives, together with certain undisclosed connections, is what prompted Fiona Young and her team to begin their investigation.

For audiences, this is also one of the film's most discussed elements: many people walk in with preconceptions, and walk out with a changed view of the whole matter.

Why it matters

Why This Story Deserves to Be Documented

Strip away the layer of political controversy, and this remains a story about young people: they train every day, get injured, recover, and step back onto the stage.

UNBROKEN places these two threads side by side — the intense demands of the dance itself, and the pressure coming from outside — and lets audiences judge for themselves what it takes to keep going.

That is also where the film's title, "UNBROKEN", comes from.
