Frequently asked questions

What kind of film is UNBROKEN?

UNBROKEN: The Untold Story of Shen Yun is an investigative documentary and the first film to present the behind-the-scenes story of Shen Yun Performing Arts. The film follows several young Shen Yun artists, documenting their training, their tours, and the threats and interference they encountered along the way.

It combines two narratives: the coming-of-age story of young dancers, and investigative reporting on how art, faith and freedom hold up under outside pressure.

When was the film released, and where can I watch it?

The film held its world premiere on March 24, 2026 at AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York, and is now available on multiple digital platforms.

You can watch the full film online on Ganjing World, or through Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon and Binge Network. Links to all platforms are collected on the Screenings / Watch page.

Who directed and produced the film?

The film is directed by Fiona Young, a documentary filmmaker based in New York. The executive producer is Steve Lance of Sincere Pictures, and the producer and writer is Penny Zhou.

Full background on the three filmmakers is on the Filmmakers page.

Who is interviewed in the film?

The film interviews eight people, including Shen Yun principal dancers Piotr Huang, Jesse Browde and Lucas Browde, lead dancer Angela Lin, Shen Yun Performing Arts emcee Leeshai Lemish, Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra violist Rachel Chen, former Shen Yun dancer Alison Chen, and Levi Browde, father of two of the dancers.

Full profiles are on the Real People page.

Can I follow the film if I have never seen a Shen Yun performance?

Yes. The film does not assume the audience is already familiar with Shen Yun's performances. The narrative starts from the people: how a group of young people commit themselves to intensive dance training, and how they face the situations that follow.

If you would like some context first, you can start with the Story & Background page.

Which film festivals has it been selected for, and what have reviewers said?

The film has been an official selection at multiple international film festivals and has been reviewed by film critics and journalists, including Film Threat, which described it as "part coming-of-age story and political thriller," and The Hollywood Times, which called it "gripping & emotionally charged."

What language versions of the film are available?

The film's original language is English. The subtitle and dubbing languages actually available vary by the viewing platform you use, so we recommend checking each platform's page.
